    The Vector and Scalar Form Factors of the Pion to Two Loops

    We calculate the vector and scalar form factors of the pion to two loops in Chiral Perturbation Theory. We estimate the unknown O(p^6) constants using resonance exchange. We make a careful comparison to the available data and determine two O(p^4) constants rather precisely, and two O(p^6) constants less precisely. We also use Chiral Perturbation Theory to two loops to extract in a model--independent manner the charge radius of the pion from the available data, and obtain \rpiV=0.437\pm 0.016 fm^2.Comment: Latex2e, JHEP.cls, 30 pages 5 figure

    We have calculated the form-factors F and G in K ---> pi pi e nu decays (Kl4) to two-loop order in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). Combining this together with earlier two-loop calculations an updated set of values for the L's, the ChPT constants at p^4, is obtained.     Analysis of the Radon-222 Concentration and Physical-chemical Quality, in Drinking Water of Taxco, Guerrero

    In this work the determination of radon gas (222Rn) and the characterization of chemical elements in drinking water of the city Taxco was carried out. Ingesting or inhaling a small number of radionuclides, as well as water of poor chemical quality, can become a potential public health problem. We are collecting 8 samples of water from a spring, physicochemical parameters were measured in field on different days of the dry season. Measurements of 222Rn were performed in the laboratory with an AlphaGUARD equipment. The chemical quality was analyzed in laboratory too by means of mayor and minor ions, by volumetry and colorimetry. The sodium was determined by Flama Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS). Trace elements were analyzed by were determined by Atomic Emission Spectroscopy with Plasma Coupled by Induction (ICP-AES). The concentrations of 222Rn present an average of 22.06 ± 2.52 BqL-1. The results obtained from the main ions and field parameters show a type of diluted sodium-calcium-bicarbonate water. The trace elements present are very small and not exceed the limit of quantification. Radon gas is produced by the igneous rock that is the top of the stratigraphic column, of the hydric recharge. Rainwater when descending through the fractures is impregnated with 222Rn gas and accumulated in the underlying rock that has sufficient porosity to accumulate water and gas in the ChacualcoŽs spring

    We consider the rare decay η→π0π0γγ\eta\to\pi^0\pi^0\gamma\gamma and calculate the non-resonant contribution to the amplitude to one loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory. We display our result as both a diphoton energy spectrum and a partial decay rate as a function of the photon energy cut. It turns out that the one-loop correction can be numerically very important and could be detected, at sufficiently large center-of-mass photon energies, from a measurement of the partial decay width.Comment: 10 pages, Latex.     Checklist of the Pleistocene marine molluscs of PraĂ­nha and LagoĂ­nhas (Santa Maria Island, Azores).

    A critical review of the reported Pleistocene species of and Lagoinhas (Santa Maria Island, Azores) is provided, new data increasing the marine molluscan fauna to 95 taxa (80 Gastropoda and 15 Bivalvia). Six of the reported taxa are considered dubious records (5 Gastropoda, 1 Bivalvia). The stratigraphic sequence of Praia Formosa is composed of two main units, about 2-4 meters above present-day sea level. In the lower unit, Patella ulyssiponensis dominates the fossil assemblage of the basal calcareous conglomerate while Myoforceps arustatus (Dillwyn, 1817) dominates the assemblage associated to a calcareous algae mat. Above a non-depositional hiatus surface, a sandy beach deposit mainly composes the upper unit. Its fossil assemblages are dominated by large amounts of Eruilin castanea (Montagu, 1803) and, in a less extent, Lucinella diwricntn (Linnaeus, 1758) and Ensis minor (Chenu, 1843). The stratigraphic sequence of Lagoinhas, located 7.4 m above present-day sea level, is also composed of two units. A basal conglomerate is fossilized by or passes laterally to a calcareous algae mat, dominated by Myoforceps aristatus and with abundant Calliostoma pecimens. As at Prainha, these lower units are covered by a highly fossiliferous sandy bach deposit, though thinner, in which Ervlie castanea is the dominant species. Some species with Caribbean or West African affinities, the "Strombus bubonius accompanying fauna" (Garcia-Talavera, 1990), were found in the lower layers. The upper layer malacofauna is mainly related to the Mediterranean faunas, similarly to what happens nowadays (Ávila, 2000)

    The Escherichia coli RnlA–RnlB toxin–antitoxin complex: production, characterization and crystallization

    The Escherichia coli rnlAB operon encodes a toxin–antitoxin module that is involved in protection against infection by bacteriophage T4. The full-length RnlA–RnlB toxin–antitoxin complex as well as the toxin RnlA were purified to homogeneity and crystallized. When the affinity tag is placed on RnlA, RnlB is largely lost during purification and the resulting crystals exclusively comprise RnlA. A homogeneous preparation of RnlA–RnlB containing stoichiometric amounts of both proteins could only be obtained using a His tag placed C-terminal to RnlB. Native mass spectrometry and SAXS indicate a 1:1 stoichiometry for this RnlA–RnlB complex. Crystals of the RnlA–RnlB complex belonged to space group C2, with unit-cell parameters a = 243.32, b = 133.58, c = 55.64 Å, ÎČ = 95.11°, and diffracted to 2.6 Å resolution. The presence of both proteins in the crystals was confirmed and the asymmetric unit is likely to contain a heterotetramer with RnlA2:RnlB2 stoichiometry

    Pion and Kaon Electromagnetic Form Factors

    We study the electromagnetic form factor of the pion and kaons at low-energies with the use of Chiral Perturbation Theory. The analysis is performed within the three flavour framework and at next-to-next-to-leading order. We explain carefully all the relevant consistency checks on the expressions, present full analytical results for the pion form factor and describe all the assumptions in the analysis. From the phenomenological point of view we make use of our expression and the available data to obtain the charge radius of the pion obtaining Vπ=(0.452+−0.013)fm2_V^\pi=(0.452+-0.013) fm^2, as well as the low-energy constant L9r(mρ)=(5.93+−0.43)10−3L_9^r(m_\rho)= (5.93+-0.43)10^{-3}. We also obtain experimental values for 3 combinations of order p6p^6 constants.Comment: 50 page

    Relationship of Hypochaeris salzmanniana (Asteraceae, Lactuceae), an endangered species of the Iberian Peninsula, to H. radicata and H. glabra and biogeographical implications

    Hypochaeris salzmanniana DC. (Asteraceae, Lactuceae) is an endangered species on the Iberian Peninsula, known from only eight coastal populations. Most authors have treated it as a variety, subspecies or simply as a synonym of H. glabra L. On the basis of morphological and cytological characters, Talavera recently separated H. salzmanniana (2n = 8) from H. glabra (2n = 10). Material of H. salzmanniana, H. glabra and H. radicata was collected from Spain, Italy, Sicily and Tunisia in order to assess taxonomic status and population relationships. Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) analysis revealed three well-differentiated species. A close relationship between H. salzmanniana and H. radicata is also confirmed by AFLP analysis and chromosome number (2n = 8), morphology, and rDNA localization (FISH, fluorescence in situ hybridization). Hypochaeris salzmanniana and H. radicata share three fixed diagnostic AFLP fragments out of 348 fragments scored. The population structure of H. salzmanniana reveals distinct groups in southern Spain that are separated geographically. High differentiation among a western (Conil to Zahara), an intermediate (Punta Paloma and Los Algarbes) and an eastern (Algeciras and La LĂ­nea) group may reflect ancient separation. Population sizes and genetic compatibility differ greatly among populations and can be used to explain levels of within-population genetic diversity, together with recent documented loss of habitats resulting from tourist developments. Population structures of H. radicata and H. glabra show a similar geographical patterning: strongly differentiated populations from the Betic Cordillera and from the Iberian Massif, which are separated at present by the Guadalquivir river. Geological events at the end of the Tertiary (Tortonian-Messinian Miocene) might help explain patterns of differentiation in these three species of sect.
